Different spot, same spirit

Few places ooze “community” more than a happy farmers market and so we are always thrilled when Community Day comes along in Chappaqua and we get to share the love.

The market will be set up in a different location in the train station parking lot. Fear not: You can’t miss us as we will have over 40 food vendors this week and of course, the hoopla and energy around the Dough Nation Pizza truck is impossible to miss!

There will be lots of fun activities around the circle so please make sure you take it all in before you shop!

You can expect to find pumpkins at the market this week. Not for decorating–yet—but for stuffing or baking. Sam, the farmer at Fresh Meadow Farm, said she selfishly started growing winter luxury pumpkins because she wanted to bake them into an heirloom pumpkin pie herself. These adorable small pumpkins are known for their super silky and custardy flesh and a very tender netted skin. Feel free to stuff these pumpkins before roasting them whole! Or try this slow cooker chicken pumpkin curry dish!

With the weather getting chilly at night, our stomachs yearn for heartier meals. R&M Farms has beautiful steaks for pan-searing. Try this pan seared steak with garlic butter! Don't forget the rosemary!

It's always a treat when AYA Hummus is in the house. Since the radiant Jenny only comes once a month, I like to stock up on a few of her hummus flavors.I keep one in the fridge and freeze the rest. A beet lemon hummus is always a welcome find in the freezer, especially if you have last-minute guests, and they freeze surprisingly well.

The cooler temps mean La Petite Occasion is returning to the market with her small-batch caramels made with Kriemhild Meadow Butter, heavy cream from local cows, local maple syrup and salt from Syracuse. Their smokey Bacon Bourbon Maple Caramels were a game-changer for me. The ideal fall treat!

Fall is a good time of year to enjoy hearty Bloody Marys. Bloody Good Mud is here this weekend with her robust Bloody Mary mix and, look at that...so is Springbrook Hollow with their Two Sisters Vodka. A match made in market heaven.

Second Mouse Cheese’s 12-year-old Cheddar is sharply delicious and tastes even better astride a cracker from The Cracker Workshop. Their business name makes sense when you see how many different flavor crackers they bring to market.

A sharp knife is safer than a dull one, so please bring your tired steak knives or carving knives to the market for a fall spruce-up. Matt, of Ready Set Sharp, also sharpens pruning shears which you’ll be needing soon!

Please welcome for the first time Plastic and Pearls jewelry. Mindy Kombert makes beautiful jewelry by repurposing single-use plastic and other debris found littering our streets and our beaches. Says Mindy: “I pick up trash when I see it and transform it into wearable art to raise awareness about the plastic pollution problem plaguing the planet.” We love her already!

And can I just say, the weather has been positively glorious. May it continue this weekend when Obercreek Farm will be hosting NOFA-NY’s fall farm fest this Sunday, September 15th. This event is free and open to the public. It's the perfect opportunity to visit one of our favorite farms!

See you at the market!
