Farmers markets spark joy!
So much so that, for the first time, the U.S. House of Representatives will recognize National Farmers Market Week through a bipartisan House resolution. In doing so, the House joins the Senate and The Department of Agriculture in recognizing this week as National Farmers Market Week.Farmers markets inspiring bi-partisanship.Who would have thought?Of course, we all know what a tremendous asset farmers markets are to their communities. For the fresh locally-grown produce, yes, but also for the inevitable sense of community they create and foster.
Here are ten things to celebrate at our market this week!
1. The corn at MEAD ORCHARD. Oh. My. Goodness. Steamed, without salt or the addition of butter, this was hands down the best corn I’ve ever had. So I can only imagine it slathered with creamery butter from Maplebrook Creamery. Or shaved off the cob in this charred and raw corn salad.
2. Red Barn Bakery is adding an extra visit to her summer schedule. They are bringing their rustic galettes and of course, the delicious blueberry scones which were recently voted the Best in Westchester.
3. Wild Moustache Yogurt’s return after a two week absence. Huzzah!
4. The knife sharpener is here! The knife sharpener is here!
5. Jenny’s new market special at AYA Hummus: Cucumber Lemon Mint hummus.
6. Obercreek Farm bringing their first peppers of the season! This means you can make this recipe for stuffed peppers (use broth from Letterbox Farm to kick the flavor up a notch) .
7. Now that all the night shades have shown up at the market you can finally make market ratatouille. By all means use this Alice Waters recipe. Taking the extra time to salt and drain the eggplant and to cook onions, peppers, tomatoes in stages pays off—BIG TIME. FYI—ratatouille is as delicious served cold or room temp.
8. The spinach empanadas at Villa Emilia Empanada.
9. The Dough Nation Pizza Truck’s market pie. Always a surprise. Always delicious and a sight to behold.
10. The happy convergence of Bloody Good Mud and Springbrook Hollow Distillery at the market so you can toast National Farmers Market with Bloody Marys.
