Pooches and pears on parade!

Of course you come to the market for pastured meats, just-picked fruit and produce, artisanal cheeses and breads and a chance to meet your local farmers and food artisans...but can we all agree that our annual pet parade is the highlight of the season?

Each year our shoppers surprise us with their creativity. This year we will be awarding cool prizes (thank you Pets a Go-Go) in three categories: Best dog/owner combo costume; most creative costume overall, and best “food — themed” costume. The parade starts at 11 a.m. You can register at the market at 10:30 or online. The fee is $10 to participate and ALL proceeds go to A New Chance Animal Rescue.

We know the parade and all the hoopla around it can be distracting so we want to draw your attention to things to look for at the market on Saturday when the weather promises to be lovely again and the trees ringing the plaza will be at their fall peak.

Please welcome guest vendor Bonnes Saveurs, specializing in all types of Mediterranean spreads, from red pepper and tomato hummus to garlicky dip and tabbouleh salad, too.

Because they’ve experienced their first frost, Fresh Meadow Farm is bringing Jerusalem artichokes and radicchio.

The Jerusalem artichoke, also called sunroot, sunchoke, wild sunflower, topinambur, or earth apple, is a species of sunflower native to central North America. It is cultivated widely across the temperate zone for its tuber, which is used as a root vegetable. Keep your sunchokes loose in a paper towel in your crisper and make this fall salad with them. Buy radicchio to make this rustic caramelized radicchio with grapes and gorgonzola. I’d sub the grapes for some of those gorgeous red pears Caradonna has been strutting. Or use both! Or make radicchio risotto, a fall and winter staple on nonnas’ tables across Northern Italy.

Speaking of flavorful risottos...make sure to pick up some mushroom risotto mix from Four Wall Farm as this will be their last visit of the season. They are still recovering from their greenhouse fire and are going to take stock this winter and are already working on lots of new ideas for next season. Wish them well!

This is roast chicken season...so make sure to pick up a whole bird from Letterbox Farm and make this classic Sunday supper for the family.

Did you see the fig and Shiitake mushroom galettes at the Red Barn Bakery tent  last week? Rendered even more divine with a dollop of White Moustache yogurt. Love that their pies also serve as reminders to get to the polls!

Did you enjoy the sandwiches and pesto from The Pesto Brothers? They will be back on Nov. 2nd. armed with extra sandwiches because they sold out in a jiffy on Saturday.

Rachel Alexander’s violin students will perform in the music tent before Milton’s set.

So it should be a fun-filled fall day at the market!

Hope to see you there,
