Pumpkins, pistachios and paella

Halloween is in our rearview mirror. Thanks to all who participated in the dog costume parade; you brought smiles to everyone! Best Individual Costume went to EARL (Cooper), who was dressed up as a loaf of Wonder Bread! Best Family Costume went to LEXIE and GEORGIE (Delaney), along with “Baby Boo” for their Monsters Inc. costume! Thanks so much to our judges: New Castle Town Council member Holly McCall, Pets-A-Gogo owner Nicole Rigger, and Adina Olan, of Breathe Pilates & Yoga. ANCAR was delighted to raise much needed funds and, fingers crossed, find forever homes for some of their foster dogs. We hope you had a safe and happy Halloween! If you indulged in a wee bit too much of your kiddo’s candy haul, it’s time for a reset. Come visit the market to find everything you’ll need to beat the sugar blahs and feel shipshape in no time!

Let’s start with those gorgeous pumpkins you perched on your porch steps or displayed on your fireplace mantel. Yes, they’re pretty and emblematic of the season, but they are also delicious and pack a nutritional wallop. This simple Pumpkin Soup will warm you on a chilly fall evening. Or try this Pasta with Sausage and Pumpkin main, using whatever catches your eye at La Trafila Pasta. And when all is said and done, don’t forget to rinse off all of those glorious seeds for this Spiced Pumpkin Seeds treat.

New to the market this week? Bitchin’ Babkas. Babkas, a traditional Polish Jewish treat, is usually filled with cinnamon or chocolate. De’Asia Collins, founder and baker, doesn’t believe in traditional limits. You’ll find Pumpkin Cheesecake Babkas, S’Mores Babkas, and many other flavors to tempt you. Please give our new vendors a warm Chappaqua welcome.

Obercreek Farm’s Lacinato kale is in its glory! It can be a little tougher than its green curly counterpart, but look no further if you’re in need of some ideas. Lacinato cooks well, as it holds texture and substance in a way that other greens may not. Scoop up some sweet potatoes from your fave farmer and chicken from R&M Farm to try this winning recipe. Or lean into the comfort food season with this Tomato, Kale, and Ricotta Lasagna. This recipe simply demands the amazing Maplebrook Farm Creamery Ricotta!

As you can imagine, things are really ramping up for turkey day at R&M Farms! Their turkeys are pastured and rotated onto new grass on a daily basis. Ranging from 10–24 pounds, Ryan’s turkeys cost $5.99 per pound and you may put in a pre-order at the market or call Ryan at (973) 903-8546. Word to the wise: attend to your Thanksgiving bird immediately. Ryan doesn’t have a hard order deadline, he offers turkeys until he’s sold out. As of this writing, he’s 50% sold out!

We’re hoping the weather will hold for the return of The Spirits Lab. Their pretty bottles don’t stand up well to the rain, so they've had to miss a few markets. Their premixed cocktails make entertaining a breeze, simply add ice. They’ve brought back the seasonal Gravedigger; a delicious blend of their Five Points Rye, chartreuse, blackberry liqueur, and fresh lime.

Spain at Home’s trademark paella pan will be bubbling, Fearless Cook Food Truck will offer up their beloved breakfast sandwiches made on just-baked biscuits and you’ll be rocking out to the sounds of Lucian Smith. See you at the market!
