Farmers bring us joy. Early every Saturday morning, our friends from Caradonna Farms, Fresh Meadow Farm, Letterbox Farm, Mead Orchards, Obercreek Farm, and Orchard Hill Organics roll up in their trucks. Without fail, they bring us the (in same cases, literal) fruits of their labor. Following the rhythms of the seasons, we find healthy, locally-grown, produce. Truly, the best the Hudson Valley has to offer. As the always eloquent Trixie, of Obercreek Farm notes, “It’s a fantastic feeling to have a full larder and we are now sitting on — literally, as our garlic, winter squash, onions, jarred products and more are stored in a basement, a true old root cellar — hundreds of pounds of each of those crops and products, and are just beginning to pull in cold storage crops such as beets, carrots, turnips, radishes, cabbage, and more. It’s a good feeling; one of security, contentedness, assurance, to have such a larder as we enter this period of change. Just as the sun rises every day, the storage crops will be there for us, no matter what each day brings.” Obercreek is reporting a record garlic harvest. Shore up your own larders with this Roasted Garlic. Add it to your soups, stews, mashed potatoes, or simply slather it on slices of market bread.
Our bakers bring us joy, as well. Whether it’s a buttery treat from Bien Cuit Bakery, a robust bagel from DoughCo Bagels, a fruit-studded scone from New Castle Scones, a crusty baguette from Wave Hill Breads, or a chicken pot pie from Noble Pies. Often, their scrumptious products are still warm from the oven when they arrive at the market!
Makers make us happy, too! Annie’s Ginger Elixir is tart and tasty, while also packing an immunity-boosting punch. Bloody Good Mud is fun for another reason; pick up some Three Sisters Vodka from Springbrook Hollow Distillery to create a Bloody Mary that's just right for you. Kariba Farms’ dried fruits and nuts are perfect snacks for hikes or to tuck into a school lunchbox. Try your favorite AYA Hummus on Candied Ginger Rye crackers from The Cracker Workshop or flavored honey sticks from Hudson River Apiaries.
Looking to cook fish this weekend? Head straight to Letterbox Farm who is selling Hudson Valley Fisheries gorgeous steelhead trout both in gorgeous fresh fillets but also, smoked, to enjoy with your DoughCo bagels.
If you haven’t bought your Thanksgiving turkey yet, you might consider participating in our turkey raffle this weekend. A $10 ticket buys you a chance to win a 10-15 pound bird (antibiotic and hormone-free) from R&M Farm. Three winners will be selected and announced on Nov. 16th. More details here. All proceeds go to the Mt. Kisco Interfaith Food Pantry.
We’re also hosting a scavenger hunt for kids on Saturday. Kids should pick up their instruction sheet and stickers at the market tent. We’ll be giving away apples to those who find at least 10 items on the list!
We hope the market helps you find happiness, too. See you there!
